What is Smart Pricing?

Smart Pricing is Protect Group’s proprietary pricing engine, developed by our in-house Data Team to optimise refund and upgrade pricing in real-time. It uses advanced machine learning models to blend behavioural insight, historical performance, and contextual factors to determine the best possible price point for each booking, optimising conversion and driving revenue without compromising commercial sustainability.

Unlike static pricing models, Smart Pricing adapts to each Partner’s booking environment. It considers a wide range of variables, including:

  • Booking patterns and timing (e.g., early-bird vs last-minute)
  • Vertical-specific behaviours (transport, ticketing, travel, etc.)
  • Historical conversion
  • Event or travel dates and seasonality
  • Customer segments
  • Additional Partner-specific features 

By analysing these inputs, we create pricing that feels relevant and fair to customers, while still delivering strong financial performance for our Partners. Event-based Pricing: Enhancing Smart Pricing

Event-Based Pricing (EBP) builds on Protect Group’s Smart Pricing by recognising the unique characteristics of specific events and their audiences. Where Smart Pricing optimises based on lead time and transaction value, EBP goes deeper by factoring in what is being bought and who is buying it.

The outcome: Partners see 10-15% more revenue uplift on top of Smart Pricing's 20% gain compared to static models.

Meet the Head of Data Science

Ruairi is the Head of Data Science at Protect Group, where he leads a talented group of data analysts and scientists who develop the algorithms and insights that power our product offerings.

Before joining Protect, Ruairi earned a PhD in Computational Bioenergetics from the University of Leeds. He then spent several years working on large-scale data engineering and data science projects in the public health sector. 

In his free time, Ruairi loves to explore the rainy national parks in the North of England with friends and family. You’ll often find him running, hiking, or cycling through these scenic landscapes.
